For the purposes of the record a conversation is defined as communication between two or more people.

Various defined topics must be discussed throughout the record attempt. A list of the discussed topics in chronological order must be submitted with the claim.

A list of general topics to be discussed may be submitted prior to the attempt for the approval of GWR, although sub categories, script, dialogue and pre-written speeches are not permitted.

No two topics of conversation are to be repeated during the attempt.

During the attempt, each participant must contribute to the conversation and not just merely sit in and listen.

Single word answers like yes or no do not count as meaningful contributions and each participant must say something other during the course of the conversation.

If a participant does not contribute to the conversation or the contribution is deemed by the witnesses as unsuitable, too short or out of context the attempt is over.

The conversation must make sense. If there is not a real conversation at any point or it seems that the participants are merely wasting time the attempt is disqualified.

The conversation must be continuous. If there is silence for more than 10 seconds the attempt is disqualified.

Substitutions for each participant are not permitted. If a participant drops out at any one time, the attempt is ended.

Conference calls and line transfers are not permitted.

Where the language of the conversation is not English, a professional interpreter must verify that the conversation complies with all the guidelines. Alternatively, multi lingual witnesses will be permitted as well.

During rest breaks, the telephone line must remain open and connected.

A second telephone is permitted to remain open in the case of technical failures on one or both of the main lines. This second line must only be used in the case of technical faults and the transfer to the second line must occur within 30 seconds. If this does not happen, the attempt is void.
